Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper or light greasing
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined
- In a separate bowl, mix hot water, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and sour cream until smooth
- Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined
- Pour the batter into prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean
- Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting
- While cake cools, beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder
- Incorporate milk and vanilla into frosting mixture and beat until light and fluffy
- Spread the dark chocolate frosting evenly over the cooled cake
Notes
Use high-quality cocoa powder for maximum chocolate intensity. Don't overmix the batter to maintain tender texture. Ensure cake is completely cool before frosting to prevent melting. Cake improves in flavor when made a day ahead.
